Bike Virginia 2010

June 25-30, 2010

Cycling Seniors Ron Cully, Pete Flaton and Dan McQueen carpooled on Friday June 25, 2010 to Staunton, VA to participate in Bike Virginia 2010. We signed up in January as part of an 8 person team for $380 including camping, luggage transport, SAG, breakfast, lunch and rest stops. We received a nice biking shirt instead of the usual tee shirt.

We biked 39 - 59 miles for 5 days totaling 256.6 miles over the hilliest Bike Virginia ever. Our average speed was 13.1 mph, top speed 36.2 mph and average riding time 3:55 hours. The first four days the temperature ranged from 95° to 100° with the heat index higher. The last day was pleasant with the temperature in the high 80s and a cooling breeze. The routes were well marked, easy to follow with very little traffic. The mountain scenery was fantstic especially around Staunton.

The breakfasts were adequate. The rest stops were good with plentiful and appropriate food and drinks with maybe one or two exceptions. The lunches were very good. Suppers and craft brews in Staunton and Harrisonburg were reasonable and very good.

Despite the many new nice touches, this years ride was somewhat chaotic and disorganized unlike past years. Directions for drivers to the long term parking were confusing and misleading at best. A middle school is not adequate to handle 1800 cyclists nor is the staff prepared to deal with adults. Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg on the other hand was a delight. The camping areas were way too far from the luggage drop off point at both places. Also the camping areas were fragmented and scattered. Kids did carry our gear to the luggage trucks at both sites. The shuttle service was chaotic. The school buses were not air conditioned. The drivers usually waited until a bus was full before leaving requiring you to swelter on a bus for 15 - 20 minutes. The buses had no set routes so you may end up on a bus running all around town for up to 45 minutes before arriving at your destination a mile or two from where you got on. Fortunately a young woman had everything running like clockwork the last day in Harrisonburg.

The riding was spectacular despite the heat. We all came home a bit healthier, a little bit more fit and happy to have completed all the rides.
