BIKE CALIFORNIA COAST
SAN FRANCISCO TO SAN DIEGO
A few days before leaving to climb Mt Aconcagua in Argentina I
found a post card from Wandering Wheels with their annual schedule on it. There was a bike ride
down the California Coast from San Francisco to San Diego in March. Since I had abandoned plans
to bike in Australia in March, I decided to check it out when I returned from Argentina. Upon
my return, I determined that I did not have any conflicts in March and there was room for me on
the biking team. I was excited about this trip because: 1) upon completion it would fill the
gap along the Pacific coast so that I will have biked from northern Vancouver Island in Canada
to the tip of Mexico's Baja and; 2) I would get together with old friends, who started me in
adventure travel for Jesus, for the first time since February 1999 in New Zealand.
March 13, 2001 Tuesday Fly Baltimore to San Francisco
Got up at 4:26 am got dressed quickly and drank a glass of orange juice. Left the house with
Anne in my car at 5:05 am. Arrived at Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport at 5:28
am. My bike in its hard case box easily slid out of the back of my car with my bullet travel
bag and day pack. Quickly said good-bye to Anne and checked in by 5:42 am. My bike flies free
on a coupon (normally a $75 charge each way) because I belong to the League of American
Bicyclists.
Departed at 6:45 am on US Air flight 45 seat 13F on an Airbus 320 from Baltimore's BWI to
San Francisco arriving at 8:55 am about 55 minutes early. We had cloud cover for the first hour
or so. We flew over a long stretch of snow covered mountains probably the Ozarks. We had cloud
cover again until we reached Denver. The Rocky Mountains were continuous and snow covered. We
then started flying over ridges of snow covered mountains separated by dark chocolate brown and
flat valleys 40-50 miles wide. I could see snow cover in the valleys further north. We flew
over Lake Tahoe about 190 miles from San Francisco. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are very pretty
and heavily snow laden.
I had my luggage and bike by 9:15. I had a long wait and was tied down because I couldn't
leave my luggage. Coach (Bob Davenport) picked me up at 12:15. Loaded my bike on the van roof
and I piled in the van with Janech Davenport, Cy Johnson, Bob Rousculp, Rod Baccus and several
others I didn't know. It was good to see everyone again.
We arrived at the Pelican Point RV Park at 1001 Miramontes Point Road in Half Moon Bay,
California 94019 phone number 650 726-9100. As I got out of the van I greeted friends of long
standing Dick and Marilyn Lehman, Pat Canale and Joy Demmocks from Christchurch, New Zealand. I
set up my tent, unpacked and assembled my bike. I flattened my bike box, helped Becky Zuehlke
flatten her bike box also from Crate Works and we loaded them on the truck until San Diego. I
had missed several meals so I walked up to the office and ate a nutty chocolate covered ice
cream bar on a stick for $1.
Coach drove Becky, Tom Makovic (dentist), Bob Rousculp, Cy, Jim Myer, Ron Allison and Rod
Baccus to Joe's on the Sea. I ate a ½ pound hamburger with mushrooms and mozzarella cheese
, French fries and ice tea for $11 including 8% California sales tax and tip.
Upon returning to camp I ate another nutty ice cream bar for $1. We had a meeting of the
entire team and introduced ourselves relating a few personal facts. We talked for a while
around a camp fire then went to bed at 12:30 Eastern Standard Time or 9:30 Pacific Coast Time.
We are located at 37 deg. 25' 44" N and 122 deg. 26' 07" W at 78 feet above sea level where the
sound of the distant surf quickly lulled me to sleep.
March 14, 2001 Wednesday Bike Half Moon Bay to Watsonville
Got up at 6:18 and packed up my tent wet from a heavy dew. At 7:00
am ate breakfast of oatmeal, blueberry yogurt, blueberry bagel and a banana.
At 8:00 am we biked out of camp and south on California 1 the Pacific Coastal Highway in 52
We biked into the Santa Cruz
KOA at 1186 San Andreas Road in Watsonville, California 95076 phone 831 722-0551 or 800 562-7701
after 67.5 miles. Set up my wet tent and showered. Marilyn served spaghetti, garlic bread,
salad, lemonade and a large brownie from the kitchen trailer. It gets dark early. We sat around
a campfire and chatted. It is cool and breezy. Went to bed at 8:30 pm.
March 15, 2001 Thursday Bike Watsonville to Monterey
Got up at 6:10 and packed up my tent. Although we are near the ocean, the tent
is dry due to the breeze. 7:00 breakfast of orange juice, banana, oatmeal, pancakes, sausage and
milk.
At 8:00 we biked from the KOA. Not much to see as it is flat and we are going through an
agricultural area. Yesterday we saw brussel sprouts but today it is all artichokes which grow
2-3' high and look like a thistle. The artichokes grow on the top of the plant. We saw many
Mexicans with huge baskets on their backs walking through picking artichokes. Stopped at the SAG
wagon at the beginning of a bike path when Dick and Pat who started late caught me. We rode
together on the bike path into Monterey.
We stopped at the Marine Museum near the water and saw an interesting short film on the
history of Monterey. Biked out to the end of the city pier lined on both sides with restaurants.
We stopped at Dominico's for lunch of hot sourdough bread and butter, cup of clam chowder,
salad and Amber beer for $19. Biked along Cannery Row and stopped at the aquarium which costs
$15.95. No one was interested so we rode around Cannery Row and then up a big hill through Fort
Ord to Veteran's Memorial Park phone number 831 646-3865 on Jefferson Drive in Monterey,
California at 1:30 pm after 37.1 miles.
Set up my tent and showered.
At 4:00 pm I took the van back to Cannery Row. Cy, Tom, John Ruckman and I walked to Monterey
Jack's Fish House for halibut, vegetables, Monterey Jack's Amber, salad, rice and apple pie ala
mode for $30.70. Stopped in a shop and bought some shampoo for $2.11.
Got back to camp at 7:10. It is very damp and cold. Went to bed at 8:00 pm. We are located at
36 deg. 35' 52" N by 121 deg. 54' 43" W at 460 feet above sea level.
March 16, 2001 Friday Bike Monterey to Big Sur
Got up at 6:30 am.
At 8:20 am we biked up the hill from camp. After some miscues and Rod's flat tire we finally
got on the 17 mile drive at the Inn at Spanish Bay. We followed the shore through Spyglass Hill
Golf Club, Cypress Point Golf Club and Pebble Beach Golf Club to Carmel Gate. It is truly
spectacular evoking memories of 1961 and 1980.
Walked around Carmel and bought some Head and Shoulders shampoo and 3 Snickers bars for $6.41
at the
Biked to Point Lobos State Park where I visited Whale Cove. I recognized the cove from a
documentary I saw on cable TV. Continuing south on California 1 I recognized the bridges and
hills at Rocky Creek and Bixby Creek.
Got into the redwoods and knew I was entering Big Sur. It hasn't changed. Stopped in the
General Store and bought a pint of Dreyers vanilla ice cream with fresh peaches in it for $3.59.
What a treat. When I left, I
noticed the name McQueen on the Big Sur Campground mail box. I stopped in the office and found
out it is owned by Don and Rena who were on vacation.
Biked into Pfeiffer State Park on Highway 1 in Big Sur, California 93920 phone 831 667-2315
or 800 444-7275. Biked over a mile through the dark redwood forest along a river to camp site
132 at 3:30 pm after 50.2 miles.
Set up my tent and took a 3 minute hot shower for $.25.
March 17, 2001 Saturday Bike Big Sur to San Simeon
Got up at 5:51, packed up and took down my tent. 7:00 am breakfast of orange juice, banana,
oatmeal and nut bread.
At 8:10 biked through the redwoods about a mile back to the road. Started up immediately on
the first of four major climbs this day. Passed everyone except Bob who I caught on the second
major climb after a good downhill. It is very hilly with many lesser ups and downs. We biked
along the side of the mountains several hundred feet above the ocean on our right. It is very
scenic and a real joy on a bike. Reminds me of Cape Breton Nova Scotia that I cycled last summer
. I stopped several times for photos, overlooks and then in Limekiln State Park with its short
killer hill getting in and out. Concerned about lunch which was on the van (no place to stop to
eat) I turned back a mile or so and met Bob, Dick and Pat. We stopped after a few miles and
waited for Joy to bring us our lunches in the van arriving at 11:30. Ate a ham, cheese, tomato,
lettuce, mustard sandwich with potato chips, Oreo cookies and an apple. It tasted so good after
all the hill work this morning. Tom arrived with Joy in the van with a broken chain on his bike. Pat fixed the chain removing a link or two on the side of the road. Biked on with Dick and Pat. We saw many colorful
Biked into San Simeon State Park about 5 miles south off California 1 on 750 Hearst Castle
Road in San Simeon, California 93452 phone 805 927-2020 or 800 444-7275 at 3:40 pm after 73.1
miles. Set up tent and showered for $.25. Ate supper of chicken noodle cheese, apple sauce,
lemonade, rolls and butter and chocolate pudding at 6:45. Sat around a camp fire and then went
to bed at 9:20 pm. We are in sites 78 and 80 located at 35 deg. 35' 49" N by 121 deg. 07' 26" W
at 0 feet elevation as we are practically on the beach.
March 18, 2001 Sunday Bike San Simeon to San Luis Obispo
Got up at 6:06 and packed up a wet tent. 7:00 breakfast of orange juice, banana, oatmeal and
egg pie.
At 7:40 am Coach drove
I biked out of camp at 11:00 am. I biked into Cayucos 18 miles down the road about 12:00. The
town has a western cow town look. Stopped at the North Shore Cafe for ice tea and a chicken
club sandwich for $11. The waitress was very nice and seemed genuinely concerned about my safety
after she asked what I was doing. At 1:15 pm I took off again through Morro Bay with the high
conical rock, Baywood Park and down to San Luis Obispo to the Motel 6 at 1433 Calle Joaquin Road
in San Luis Obispo, California 93542 phone number 805 549-9595.
I checked into room 108 at 3:00 pm after 41.6 miles with Pat Canale as a roommate. Pat gave
me a cold Pete's Wicked Ale. Shaved and showered. Pat, Joy and I walked about a mile to the
Leguna BBQ and Brew for a Courage draft beer, Madden Madness sandwich, French fries and a $5
phone card for $21.55. Walked back and we all washed $.75 and dried $.75 clothes in the motel.
It was sunny and warm with little wind all day. We are located at 35 deg. 14' 54" N by 120 deg.
40' 53" W at 0 feet elevation which can't be right.
March 19, 2001 Monday Bike San Luis Obispo to Lompoc
Got up at 6:00 am and packed up which was easy with no tent. At 6:40 walked to Denny's with
Pat and sat with the Lehmans for breakfast of orange juice, milk, 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, bacon and
sausage for $8.87. We received our daily maps at an 8:00 meeting.
Biked from the motel with Dick, Pat and Becky since Rod had driving duty at 8:15. We came out
to the beach at Pismo Beach and rode along it through Grover Beach and Oceano. We passed a gas
station and convenience store that obviously had been held up. It was taped off with several
police cars, TV cameras and we could see a lot of blood on the large glass windows. We biked
inland through agricultural country. We moved along pretty fast for 27 miles into Guadeloupe
where we stopped about 10:00 am for a donut and milk for $1.30. We had one good long climb. We
biked into Orcutt where Dick knew of Jack's from last year's ride. We stopped for lunch of ice
tea, chicken tortilla soup, French fries, grilled ham and cheese sandwich for $8.86. We were all
stuffed. We biked on climbing Purisima Hill with a moderate slope for about 2 miles. After a
great downhill we stopped in Lompoc at McDonalds for a large vanilla soft ice cream for $.85.
Pat and I rode to the library to send emails. We biked into the River Park RV campground PO
Box 2025 in Lompoc, California 93438 phone number 805 736-6565 at 4:15 after 64.1 miles. Set up
the tent and showered for $.25. 5:30 supper of beef stroganoff, corn bread, salad, lemonade and
fresh strawberries with ice cream. Today's biking though pretty and interesting was a let down
after the beautiful coastal riding further north. We are located at 34 deg. 39' 00" N by 120 deg
. 26' 04" W at 64 feet elevation.
March 20, 2001 Tuesday Bike Lompoc to Santa Barbara
Got up at 6:15 and packed up a wet tent. 7:30 breakfast of orange juice, banana, oatmeal,
biscuit and gravy with hamburger in it.
Biked from camp about 8:10 and up a gradual hill into a valley on California 1. Cycled in
ranch country along the valley gently rising and falling for 18 miles to US101 where we dropped
down rather quickly to the coast and fog. Can't see much except for a brief stint of sunshine so
I kept moving along rather briskly. The new 11-30 cassette, 42 front sprocket and chain Janech
put on has my bike running well and shifting crisply. I've gained 2-3 miles per hour for the
same energy output. Got off US101 in Santa Barbara at 11:00 after 42 miles. Stopped at a Rite
Aide for sunscreen and 2 large chocolate bars with almonds for $8.42. Stopped at Lito's Mexican
Restaurant for two seafood enchiladas, beans, rice, tortillas, salsa and a Mango Snapple for $10
.16.
Biked into the Shoreline Community Church at 935 San Andres in Santa Barbara, California
93101 phone number 805 963-4228 at 1:15.
We can't get into the church school until 3:00 pm so Bob Rousculp and I biked downtown to
Mel's for a Miller Draft and a New Castle Brown for $7.75. Talked to Mike from Buffalo and Eddie
the bartender and ex Marine embassy guard in Nairobi, Kenya. Stopped at an ATM and withdrew
$102.25.
Biked back to the church located at 34 deg. 24' 47" N by 119 deg. 42' 34" W at 71 feet
elevation at 3:00 after 57.7 miles. Set up my tent in the courtyard along with Ron and John
Ruckman. Everyone else slept inside. Took a Wheels shower outside. The shower runs off a garden
hose with a propane hot water on demand heater and a plastic wind break around the double shower
head. It works very well.
Rode in the van to State Street and walked down to a street fair or open market with Pat
Canale and Joy Demmocks. Stopped in Madison's for mushrooms, steak, mashed potatoes, squash and
a draft Sam Adams Lager for $17.50. Stopped in Borders and listened to a rhythm and blues 5
piece band that was very good. Walked back to the church and to bed about 8:15.
March 21, 2001 Wednesday Bike Santa Barbara to Malibu
Got up at 6:00 and packed up a damp tent. Ate a 7:00 breakfast of oatmeal, cheese grits, milk
, orange juice and banana.
Dick Lehman asked if I wanted to help mark the route so we took off at 7:25. We rode through
Santa Barbara marking many turns. We passed a beach with 20-30 volleyball courts. We cycled
along the coast through Carpenteria down to Ventura sometimes on a path, beach road, CA1 or
US101. We almost always had plenty of room as we followed the Pacific Coastal Bike Trail. We
stopped in Ventura at Kelley's Coffee Shop for the now familiar and excellent huge blueberry
muffin and 16 ounce milk for $3. Biked through Oxnard and Port Hueneme. It is overcast and
chilly. We realized we had passed the last town on our route without eating lunch. We rode about
12 miles down the coast and spotted Nautilus' Net on the left side of the highway where we
stopped about 12:45 pm for a fish burger and a Strawberry Snapple for $5.82. Talked to a
friendly young man who said he was a biker and seemed quite knowledgeable about bikes. I had to
break away as we biked over a hill and down about a mile to the Leo Carrillo State Park at 1:33
pm after 64.1 miles.
The sun came out as we pulled into camp. Set up my tent under a tree then showered and shaved
. I ate a great meal prepared by Marilyn but during a senior moment forgot to make a note of it.
Went to bed at 8:00 pm. We are on the beach at 34 deg. 02' 54 N by 118 deg. 56' 00" W at 0 feet
elevation.
March 22, 2001 Thursday Bike Malibu to Rolling Hills Estate
Got up at 6:10 and packed up a dry tent. Ate breakfast of orange juice, banana, oatmeal,
peaches and milk.
Dick asked if I could mark the route so we took off at 8:25 with Pat Canale. It is cool and
overcast but not much wind along the shore. We went up a hill immediately so we were warm. We
kept a pretty good pace through Malibu lined with movie trucks and equipment then Topanga Beach
along CA1. We picked up a bike path entering Santa Monica on the north edge of Los Angeles and
followed it along the beach all the way to Redondo Beach a distance of about 20 miles. The path
is paved and runs right along the beach with sand often on both sides of the path. There are
literally hundreds of volleyball courts on the beach often found in groups of 50 or more courts.
Passed muscle beach with the exercise apparatus on the beach. Everyone looks good or tries to
look good as it seems to be paramount. We passed under the loud and busy air traffic landing and
taking off from Los Angeles Airport.
We met up with Bob Rauch and we stopped at Marina del Rey for a hot dog and milk for $4. Bob
then led us to the end of the bike path with a very steep (about 15%) 150 yard ramp up off the
beach. He then gave us directions to the Rolling Hills United Methodist Church at 26438 Crenshaw
Boulevard in Rolling Hills Estates, California 90274 phone number 310 377-6771. We rode in
about 1:30 after 52.2 miles.
Helped unload the truck and set up the shower. Set up my tent in the yard. Took a Wheels
shower.
At 4:45 a group of about eight walked along the system of bridle paths and past fenced horses
to Bob Rauch's house with a swimming pool on about an acre and met his wife Barbara. All 18 of
us were invited for dinner of two Beck beers, dip, vegetables, fruit, lasagna, garlic bread,
salad, cheesecake and red Zinfadel wine. We watched Duke beat UCLA (Coach's alma mater) in the
NCAA basketball tournament on TV. We also saw the end of the game as Maryland defeated
Georgetown.
Rode back to the church in the van. I was the only one to sleep outside in a tent falling
into my sleeping bag at the ridiculously late hour of 10:00 pm. We are located at 33 deg. 46' 54"
N by 118 deg. 21' 04" W at 500 feet elevation.
March 23, 2001 Friday Rest in Rolling Hills Estate
Got up about 6:20 am. Pulled up the stakes on my tent and carried it set up into the gym out
of sight with my gear. The church didn't want a tent in the yard during school hours. At 8:00 am
we ate breakfast of orange juice, milk, blueberry waffle with syrup and whipped cream, 2 eggs
over light and sausage in the church kitchen.
Shuttled down to do laundry $.75 and dry $.50. Returned to church then shuttled to the
library to send an e-mail. Went to the Red Onion Mexican Restaurant but walked out because we
had problems with the waiter and maitre de. Took the van down to Islands for a Sam Adams draft
and a Baja enchilada for $16.42 with Joy, Pat, Bob Rousculp and Dick and Marilyn Lehman. Joy,
Pat and I walked back to the church.
Joy, Cy, Tom, Jim Myer, Bob Rousculp and I walked to Bob and Barbara Rauch's house to watch
NCAA basketball. Jim Hickman showed up later with the van. We ordered Domino's pizza 3 pieces
for $4. Called Anne on the calling card.
Shuttled back to church. Carried everything outside but didn't stake the tent down. Went to
bed at 9:30 pm.
March 24, 2001 Saturday Bike Rolling Hills Estate to Newport Beach
Got up at 5:18 and packed up. Took down a dry tent and loaded it with my bags onto the truck.
Ate 6:30 breakfast of a bagel, oatmeal, orange juice and banana. Met Phil O'brian the librarian
at Whitier College who I remembered when he rode a few days with us on the spring 1996 Coast to
Coast ride.
Biked out at 7:00 am to mark the route with Dick Lehman and Pat Canale. We biked through some
rough areas of LA and along some piers with thousands of off loaded cars. Biked through Long
Beach to CA1 and down the coast to Surfside, Sunset Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach to
Balboa.
Biked to camp in Doheny State Beach Park at 25300 Dana Point Harbor Drive in Dana Point,
California 92629 phone number 949 496-6172. We couldn't get a site until 2:00 pm. We biked along
the waterfront to see a 2 masted schooner ship with a working crew. We rode back to CA1 and
marked the way into camp. We returned to camp then went out again to McDonalds for a vanilla ice
cream cone for $.96. Returned to camp then Pat and I biked out to Carlos Mexican Restaurant for
two Negra Modelas, tortillas and salsa for $4 as we watched Maryland defeat Stanford 87-73.
Returned to camp about 4:15 after 59.8 miles. Set up tent and showered $.25. Janech told me I
owed her $100 for all the work and parts for my bike. That is extremely reasonable. At 5:30 pm
we ate supper of lemonade, hamburger, gravy, mashed potatoes, corn pudding, salad and pecan pie
with whipped cream. Marilyn is a great cook! The food has been super the whole trip. My calling
card had only $.65 left, not enough to make a call. I collected enough change and called brother
Sam in Chula Vista for $1.50. Sat around a campfire and talked for some time. Went to bed at
9:30. We are located at 33 deg. 27' 47" N by 117 deg. 40' 53" W at less than 10 feet elevation.
March 25, 2001 Sunday Bike Newport Beach to Carlsbad
Got up at 6:18 and packed up a dry tent. 8:00 breakfast of orange juice, melon, milk, oatmeal
and egg, ham and cheese muffin.
Biked out of camp with Dick and Pat to mark the route at 8:30. Rode along the coast through
San Clemente and then onto the Pacific Coastal Highway CA1 to Marine Camp Pendleton. We rode
through the camp to Oceanside where we stopped at 10:45 am for a cream filled glazed donut and
16 ounce milk for $1.90. We biked into Carlsbad where we ran into Coach and Janech a few blocks
from the motel at the end of the ride. Pat picked up the van with my bike box, tent and luggage
in it. Brother Sam was waiting at the Super 8 as we arrived at 11:25 after 34.6 miles making my
total bike mileage for the trip 602 miles.
Sam met Pat, Dick and then Coach and Janech after they arrived. I assembled my collapsed hard
case bike box then tore down my bike and packed it with my tent into the bike box. The boxed
bike fit into Sam's Saturn with no problem. Sam drove us to his house in Chula Vista arriving at
12:40. It is sunny and very warm.
I shaved and showered. We drove to Sam's son Sam III's house about 3:00 pm and visited with
Sammy, Cindy, daughter Bridget, her boyfriend and son Conner. We then drove to daughter Pam Lee
and husband Henry's new house about 4:00 pm. Henry's son from a previous marriage was there.
The house has a swimming pool and a great wide open view of a canyon behind the house. Sam III
and family arrived. At 5:30 we ate supper of chicken enchilada, steak enchilada, beans and rice.
It was very very good. Drove back to Sam's house and went to bed at 10:10 pm.
March 26, 2001 Monday Fly San Diego to Baltimore
Got up at 5:37 am and drank some orange juice. Left at 6:05 arriving at the San Diego Airport
at 6:30. Checked in at US Airways for flight 84 seat 16F on an Airbus 321 put in service March
7. Sam parked the car and came into the terminal. He stayed until I boarded the plane.
We took off from San Diego at 8:25 am and landed in Charlotte at 3:30 pm, a flight of 4
hours and 5 minutes. Was served a Bloody Mary Mix then pancakes, sausage, grapefruit, grapes,
fruitcake, mint chocolate milk and two servings of orange juice. Towards the end of the flight,
I was served a mixed snack and another Bloody Mary Mix. The mountains were snow covered all the
way across the country with the Smoky Mountains heavily laden with deep snow.
US Airways flight 1187 took off at 4:50 and landed at Baltimore's BWI Airport at 5:45. I got
off the plane and had my luggage and bike box by 6:10 pm. Anne showed up about 6:45 after her
health club exercise class and we drove home arriving about 7:15.

degrees. It was fairly flat to our right where there was about 100' cliff dropping to the sea.
We made many stops to watch the seals, walk on the rocks or check out a beach. I biked with
Becky, then Bob R., then Rod and Pat. Pat and I stopped in Davenport for a very large blueberry
muffin and milk for $3.03. We biked into Santa Cruz where Bob R joined us. Rode out the pier and
along the beaches. This brought
back memories of driving down from San Francisco in 1961 and
how cold! the water was. Since I forgot
my cup and silverware, Bob R and I bought insulated cups
at Walgreens for $1.50 each. About 3:00 I ate a hot dog and root beer at a fast food place for
$3.16. We all agreed not to do that again. Stopped to help John and Ann Stratman with a bad flat
tire due to a gash in the tire.
Packed up, took down my tent and loaded everything on the truck. Ate breakfast of omelet, orange juice,
banana, and oatmeal at 7:30 am.
drug store. Walked through Carmel Plaza that was very nice. I remembered Carmel from 40
years ago when I ate lunch there with brothers
Dave and Sam and their wives. Ran into Pat and Joy on the street. Biked out of town on the Shoreline Scenic Drive to the
Carmel Mission which is in a school but still very nice.
I saw hundreds of sea otters from a high overlook.
Ate a 5:30 pm supper of pork chop, stuffing, green beans, salad, lemonade and apple cobbler. I asked
Janech to tighten my rear cassette, lube the chain and adjust the front derailleur which wasn't
shifting well. She had to replace the derailleur cable.
Sat around a fire in camp next to the river. Went to bed at 8:00 as again it is rather cool. It is amazing but I really enjoy sleeping
9-10 hours each night. At home I can't stay in bed beyond about 7 hours. We are located at 36
deg. 14' 31" N by 121 deg. 46' 31" W at 177 feet above sea level.
hang gliders. Saw sea otters and a whale spouting water a ways off shore. Passed many seals on a beach next to the road with 2 elephant seal bulls that were huge probably over a ton each. We could see Hearst Castle on top of a mountain off to our left as we rode. We came out of the mountains and really rolled through about 20 miles of coastal plain.
Rod, Becky, Jim, Ron, Ann, John Stratman and I to the Hearst Castle for Tour 1 (of 4) at $10. Hearst
Castle sits on top of a mountain a five mile drive from the highway. It has a main structure
and three large guest houses with a huge outdoor and huge indoor pool. It had a zoo, arboretum
and cost $10,000,000 to build. The views are incomparable. Coach picked us up at 10:10.
Stopped for a
blueberry muffin and milk for $2.10. Hundreds of road bikers out this morning. Rode out onto
Balboa Island and then took a car ferry $.65 back to the Pacific Coastal Highway. Continued down
CA1 through Leguna Beach and South Leguna to Dana Point. Stopped at 11:00 am in Gelson's (large
grocery store) for a sub sandwich, potato chips, fruit salad, pickle and milk for $5.38.
